Henry Leach Associates provides a Consultancy and Analytical Toxicology service for the veterinary industry in the UK and Ireland. It was formed when the late Consultant Biochemist, Henry Leach retired after 43 years working in the National Health Service in 1990. During this time Henry Leach developed a particular interest in analytical toxicology. He went into partnership with Dr Keith D Griffiths his successor as Consultant Biochemist. Henry Leach died in 1999.
The business was initially developed to provide an analytical service to Veterinary Practitioners involved in the purchasing and post race testing of racehorses for the presence of substances that are banned under the Rules of Horse racing. Analysis of specialised foods given to racehorses has also been undertaken. Although this still remains an important aspect of the business there has been a shift into more general toxicology in a wide range of animals - domestic, farming and from zoo's, for example when there are suspicions of accidental or malicious administration of drugs or poisons. A service for storing post purchase samples is also provided.
A Consultancy service is available and reports for legal purposes can be prepared.
The analytical technique, Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), is the unique aspect of the service. It is a technique that requires very specialist expertise in undertaking, interpreting and applying to the particular veterinary situation. We also have access to many other analytical techniques including immunoassay, gas chromatography and spectrometry.
